Single-estate Indian coffee: what it is and why it matters

India is not the first country most people think of when they order an espresso. Yet it is one of the world’s larger coffee producers, with a style all of its own. High Grounds, the coffee brand we import, grows its beans on a single estate in Coorg, in the hills of south-west India.
Most supermarket coffee is a blend of beans from many farms, sometimes from several countries. Single-estate coffee comes from one farm only. That makes it fully traceable: you know exactly where it was grown, by whom and how. It also gives the coffee a consistent, recognisable character, shaped by one piece of land.
Coorg, also known as Kodagu, lies in the state of Karnataka, in the Western Ghats mountain range. Karnataka grows most of India’s coffee, and Coorg is at its heart. With its misty hills and green valleys, the region is often called the “Scotland of India”, a nickname we couldn’t resist.
Coffee in this part of India is traditionally grown under trees rather than in open fields. At High Grounds, the coffee grows under a two-layer canopy of rosewood, jackfruit and other native trees. The shade slows down ripening, which gives the cherries more time to develop flavour.
The estate also grows pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and Coorg mandarins between the coffee plants. Every cherry is picked by hand at peak ripeness and dried in the sun.
Coffee from Coorg tends to have a medium to full body and low acidity. High Grounds describes its coffee with notes of dark chocolate, earthy tones and warm spice, with a smooth finish. Coorg Arabica is protected by a Geographical Indication, a label of origin recognised in India.
A single-estate Indian coffee gives your menu something guests rarely see: a clear origin and a story to go with every cup. Its low acidity and chocolatey profile make it easy to like, whether served as an espresso, a flat white or a filter coffee.
